PIONEERS
I never speak about anything I haven't either lived or have been in close proximity with..The only things I can speak with any voice of authority on is 1. Songwriting or writing in general only because it's all I've done my whole life and I have had some perceptions about it along the way, and 2. The songwriters I served my apprenticeship with; those people being Billy Swan, John Buck Wilkin , John Hurley, Ronnie Wilkins, and Kris Kristofferson; these people I new intimately when we were young men in the very early 60's. None of us at that time ever thought of attaining mastery over the art even though that was our intention. We were there on music row to give ourselves up to the forces of THE SONG, period. If I write posts about Kristofferson, Swan, of anyone else I assure you it's not because I am name dropping to make myself look better, but rather because I am so grateful and truly blessed to not only have been put in their path, but to have been highly influenced by their prowess of visionary and revelatory achievements and their attitude toward the work ethic it took to produce masterful art..I was inspired in the same way by Vince Matthews, John Hartford,Eddie, Rabbit, Tony Joe White, Lee Clayton and Shel Silverstein, Lynda Hargrove, Dolly Parton, Dianne Davidson, Marshall Chapman, Towns Van Zant, John Prine, Billy Joe Shaver,Tom Ghent, and others, but essentially in the beginning it was the top five I aforementioned...Let it be known I am not trying to take away the luster in any way from the fans who love these individuals, but rather enlarge on their image and contributions,.Just to have been in the shadow of these great artists was my privilege of destiny to have been in the right place at the right time..They were my spiritual brothers and sisters..I knew these people like you might know your mother and father, and siblings; you just know them and thats all you can say..For anyone whose followed the music of any of the people I mentioned, you can't lose, these people were way beyond most of whats going on now in Nashville's music industry and will always be the known as the foundation stones of what revolutionized songwriting in this town at a very primitive time in it's artistic history.
